about
MATTERS UNKNOWN hits with heat on second single ‘BlindSpot’, a deeply spiritual odyssey and firm collaboration with Senegalese Griot Mohamed Gueye on Sabar.
This tune is an ode to the London cyclist, whilst also casting metaphors on the cadence of mental health. Just as in The Blues the practice of the affirmation of life is expressed with melancholy. BlindSpot connects with the listener through exploring the declaration of sorrow whilst deploring despair.
This groove was originally inspired by drummer Matt Davies's experience of mentorship in Gambia where he translated this rhythm to the drum kit; however it wasn’t until meeting Mohamed Gueye that this tune was complete. Passed down to him by his ancestors, Mohamed has a detailed understanding of Sabar rhythms and the history of Senegalese culture made clear through his pervasive yet deeply melodic drumming. He brings the contemporary inline with the tradition. From history we write our future and this fusion is definitive of the African diasporic unity in modern contemporary British music.
